The 2010 racing season at Wake County Speedway ended with Joe Heigl making a charge in the final few Dunn-Benson Ford Super Late Model events. Coming into 2011, it looked as though that trend was going to continue.  Heigl took the pole, edging out Alex Fleming by just under a tenth of a second.  Early on, Heigl would pull ahead of the competition, while Fleming and Kevin Floars fought behind him.

Kevin Floars found himself in position to take the lead from Joe Heigl, but crafty moves around lapped traffic allowed Heigl to keep the lead for the first 35 laps.  Fleming would charge back, making a pass for the lead coming off turn 4 with 15 laps to go.  From there it was clear sailing for the Raleigh native, winning the season opener and taking the points lead in the process.  Floars would hang on to second place, with Charlie Stephenson, Joe Heigl and Curtis Simpkins rounding out the top five.

In the Harper’s Grafix Limited Late Model division, former UCAR standout Robert Arch turned heads by sitting on the pole in his first ever Limited Late Model race.  Hope turned to heartbreak, as Arch would spin on lap 1, though through some excellent car control Arch kept the car off the wall and was able to continue.

The 2010 Limited champion, Frankie Dominick Jr., took the lead early, but Will Roland would make a Lap 3 pass to take a lead that he would never relinquish. Dominick Jr. would make a late charge but it would prove to be too little. Dominick would settle for second while Robert Arch would rally for a third place finish.

Justin Jones dominated the 2010 racing season, and showed no signs of letting up in Wake County Speedway’s Pro Modified division.  Jones led from wire to wire while Todd Langdon and Dennis Capps battled for second behind him. Langdon faltered late, and Capps would take second, while Langdon held onto third.

In Citgo Mini-Mart Stock 4 Cylinder action, it appeared as though Jesse Duke was going to pick up where he left off in 2010. Duke would take the lead early, while Jeremy Ottaway kept in Duke’s tire tracks. It looked as if Duke had the race won until a lap 23 caution for a crippled Ford Mustang would re-rack the field for a two lap shootout.  Jeremy Ottaway took advantage of double-file restarts and a poor restart by Jesse Duke to take the lead with two to go. Duke did his best to move Ottaway out of the way, but Jeremy Ottaway would prove to be too tough, winning his first race at Wake County Speedway. Duke would settle for second, with Chris Crosby finishing third.

In Dirt Cheap Sand Rock & Mulch UCARs, former Late Model Stock driver Eric Winslow would take the lead from Jim Bounds on lap one and not look back, holding off a late-charging Chris Gault for second, while Kristin Gault finished third.  In Mini Cups, Holden Haddock would slip by a ill-handling Nick Robinson car to win the first race of 2011, while Robinson and Will Bristle finished second and third.

Racing returns to Raleigh’s bullring this Friday night with a full night of racing. In action will be the Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, Pro Modifieds, Stock 4 Cylinders, UCARs and Legends. David Clark came into Friday night’s 50 lap Dunn Benson Ford Super Late Model event perfect on the season at Wake County Speedway, and at the end of the night he kept his streak alive. Clark sat on the pole, with Joe Heigl starting on his outside. Track record holder Randy Renfrow would have to start further back, but throughout the evening made gains on Heigl and Clark. Heigl would eventually give way to Renfrow, and it appeared as though Renfrow was making ground on Clark, slowly closing the gap from first to second. Renfrow would run out of time, though, and David Clark managed to stay perfect on the season. Renfrow would finish second, with Heigl third, Charlie Stephenson fourth and Curtis Simpkins fifth. The Dunn-Benson Ford Super Late Model Division ran their third race of 2010 at the historic .23 mile bullring in Raleigh, NC, and for the third time this season David Clark completed the 50 laps as the victor. Clark took his second straight pole of the season, bettering Joe Heigl’s time by a tenth of a second. Clark, who led every lap, was continually pursued by Heigl throughout the race. Despite a late run from Heigl while Clark worked through lapped traffic, Clark came home the victor. The second place finish is Heigl’s second. David Clark took the pole in Dunn Benson Ford Super Late Models, but at the onset of the night’s racing, it appeared to be anyone’s race. Behind Clark, veterans Charlie Stephenson, Joe Heigl, Alex Fleming, Curtis Simpkins, Kevin Floars and Jim Kelley all qualified within .25 seconds of the pole time.
