Stephens Charges to Victory
May 9, 2008
Written by Chad Williams
The first feature of the evening was the 600 Incorporated
Legends. Norman Perry started on the pole in the #7 Billy Gomez Jr. alongside in
his #66. Perry got the jump on Gomez, but going down the backstretch Gomez took
the lead back from Perry. The caution flew on lap 2 as the #30 car spun in turn
2 with no damage. The green flew once again and the action heated up as the 30
car began moving through the field, but on lap 14, contact between him and the
#99 led to the second and final caution of the race. Billy Gomez held the lead
in his #66 to take the win over the #7 of Norman Perry. Third place went to the
#27 of Kevin Yates.
The North Carolina Iron Works Modified 4 Cylinder class
proved to have the most exciting battle of the evening. Randy Pearce started on
the pole in his #18 with Sam Pacitti along side in his #43. The green flag flew
and Pacitti got the jump on Pearce. The two battled for 8 laps with the fans on
their feet before the action was slowed. Bob Carter Jr. slowed his #8 machine
and came to a stop in turn 3 to bring out the caution. The green flag came back
out and Pacitti led the way. Pearce made multiple attempts to pass, but could
never quite complete the pass. Lapped cars came into play later. On lap 25, Sam
Pacitti was putting a lap on the #55 of Kevin Floars when the two made contact
spinning Floars on the backstretch. Floars made contact with Randy Pearce’s
machine, but both cars continued and Pearce maintained 2nd place.
Pacitti led the field to the green and fought off Pearce to get the win. Sam
“Showtime” Paccitti brought his D& V Repair, Bobby’s Welding Service,
Fuquay Tire and Automotive #43 Ford Fusion home first. Randy “Hotdog” Pearce
had to settle for 2nd in his #18 Chassis Dynamics, Rolesville
Equipment Co. Ford. Rounding out the top 3 was T.J. Dillon in his #06 Fuquay
Embroidery, Steve Ashworth Performance Racing Engines Ford.
The Harpers Graphix Limited Late Model race proved to be
another great battle. Andy Wiley started from the pole in his #66 car with Tony
Cooper on the outside of row 1 in the #7 machine. Wiley jumped out to the lead.
On lap 5 things began to go wrong for a few drivers. The #62 of Jason
Adam’s started smoking heavily and pulled into the pits, but it was too late.
The 50, 78, and 38 all spun in turn 4 in what appeared to be oil. The #38 of
Ricky Jones had severe rear end damage and was done for the night. The #50 of
Frankie Dominick had front end damage, but continued on after repairs. Andy
Wiley took the field back to green for 13 laps as Jason White and Zachary Marks
moved into 2nd and 3rd. Frankie Dominick came to a stop in
turn 4 on lap 18 after contact with the outside wall. Dominick pulled his car
into the pits and retired. The field went back to green and Jason White took the
lead from Wiley, with Zachary Marks moving into 2nd place and pushing
Andy Wiley back to third. The field went green from here on out with Jason White
bringing home the checkered flag in his #51 Southern Wake Mobile Auto Monte
Carlo. Zachary Marks finished 2nd in his #25 Shulz Iron Works, B.
Pleasant Monte Carlo. Andy Wiley brought home a strong third place with his #66
R& J Custom Exhaust, ACH Ironworks
Monte Carlo
.
The main event of the night was the Dunn Benson Ford Super
Late Model race. Walt Gibson started from the pole in his #47 with Big Jim
Kelley along side in the K7 machine. Gibson got a jump on the field with
Jonathan Logan following to take 2nd. On lap 7, Logan and Gibson made
contact spinning the 47 of Gibson. The
#55 of Kevin Floars was also involved. The
incident left
Logan
with some right front damage. The green flag came back out for only 1 lap as
Kevin Floars spun on lap 8 in turn 2 to bring the yellow back out. The green
flag waved once again and Big Jim Kelley led the field. The caution flew once
again on lap 17 for debris from the #21 of Jonathan Logan. The field went back
to green and Charlie Stephenson went to work on Kelley for the lead. On lap 20,
Stephenson completed the pass and headed for victory lane, but the pace was
slowed again on lap 27 with a red flag. A crew member for Kevin Floars needed
medical attention and the red flag was displayed to allow
EMS
workers to get to the young man who ended up being ok. The green flag came back
out and Stephenson walked away, but behind him Big Jim Kelley and Jonathan Logan
started a battle that led to contact on lap 45 sending the K7 spinning.
Stephenson went on to win in his #85 Quality Lightning Protection, Boyette’s
Automotive Dodge. Jonathan Logan brought his #21 Advance Auto Parts Ford home in
a strong 2nd. Big Jim Kelley fought back to 3rd place in
his #K7 Cheap Charlie’s Floors, Joey Grissin Racing Engines Chevrolet. After
the race, Logan and Kelley made contact on the backstretch leaving
Logan
’s car unable to drive back to the scales, but with the help of the tow truck
he was able to get weighed.
The final race of the night was the CITGO Mini Mart 4
Cylinders. Greg Carroll continued his stranglehold on the competition by
starting on the pole in his #15 with young Elliott Jewel starting outside in the
#23 machine. Carroll jumped out to the lead and the field scrambled for
positions behind him. On lap 7, it was Kevin Jeffries bringing out the caution
as he spun off of turn 4 with no contact. On lap 8, Jeffries spun again off of
turn 4 in the same spot to bring the field to a crawl. The cars went back green
for 3 laps before the #62 of Michael Woodard and #88 of Jeffries came spinning
off of turn 4 with no contact to each other or anything else to bring the yellow
out one more time. The field went green for 12 laps after this before the #51 of
Cory Walker climbed the backstretch wall and came to a stop in turn 3 with heavy
right front damage to end his night. Greg Carroll just plain outran the field to
pick up the win in his #15c The A/C Company, Thompson Construction, Interstate
Sign Co. Mustang. Todd Langdon brought the #71 Walls Roofing, Langdon/ McKenzie
Contractors Ford home with a strong 2nd place to maintain his points
lead. Young Daniel Vuncannon had a strong showing in his #50 Talton’s Metal
Products, Southern Wake Automotive Mustang finishing 3rd.
It was a great night of racing from Wake County Speedway.
Join us this Friday May 16th for The North Carolina Iron Works Bike
races with special guest Muddy the Mud Cat. All classes will be running
including the Ucars.
Logan
capitalizes on others misfortune
May 2, 2008
The night began with many stories developing such as why 4
cylinder points leader Wil Smith was not in attendance and why Steve Smith was
driving his daughters Limited Late Model, but by the end of the night it was
more about Hot Tempers and a driver making the best out of a slick situation.
The first feature of the night was the Dirt Cheap Sand,
Rock, and Mulch Ucars. Jason Capps started on the pole in his #29 with the #94
of John Vernon on the outside pole. Capps jumped out to an early lead and kept
the lead even though
Vernon
put pressure on him multiple times. On lap 15 Capps caught 2 lapped cars and
went 3 wide to make the pass and maintain his lead.
Vernon
also made it through and saw his chance to make a move on lap 16 as Capps got
sideways, but maintained control of the car and the lead over
Vernon
. Capps pedaled his way to a hard fought victory in his #29 Wise Recycling,
Bakers Transport, Pro Tent Cavalier. John Vernon had to settle for 2nd
in his #94 Cavalier. Janet Mccaskill caused a lot of raised eyebrows with a
strong 3rd place finish in her #18 Grafix Unlimited, Bobby Gregory
Welding car.
The North Carolina Iron Works Modified 4 cylinder race left
everyone wondering if anyone could stop the Hotdog from leaving a taste of
defeat in everyone's mouth. For the second week in a row, Randy “Hotdog”
Pearce took the Pole and the win. Randy jumped to an early lead and with no
caution flags the field could do nothing with the #18 Rolesville Equipment
Co.
, Chassis Dynamics, Trans Medics Ford as
he cruised to the win. Kevin Floars made a strong showing bringing his #55
Central
Carolina
Preowned, Just Tires Chevy SS home with a strong 2nd place showing.
Sam “Showtime” Pacitti claimed 3rd place in his #43 D&V
Repair, Bobby's Welding Service Ford Fusion.
The Harpers Graphix Limited Late Model class was full of
hot tempers and surprises. The first heat race to determine the pole sitter
featured former Modified 4 champion Steve Smith driving his daughters’ car.
William Pearce won the heat race, but on the last lap Steve Smith and Jim Place
made contact in turn 1 spinning both cars and leaving Place with heavy damage to
his front end. The feature started with Pearce on the pole in his #78 and Tony
Cooper on the outside pole in his #7 machine.
Jim Place
started the race with a lot of tape holding his front end together. Pearce
battled side by side with Cooper for a few laps before establishing himself as
the leader as Cooper began to slide back to the 4th position as the
flagman displayed the black flag for a sparking and smoking #16 of
Jim Place
. On lap 9, Place finally fell victim to his earlier damage as his car came to a
stop in turn 1 with what appeared to be a flat tire. During the caution, Place
made his feelings towards Steve Smith very visible as Smith passed. The field
went back green with a fierce battle shaping up in the front. Pearce held the
lead with Zachary Marks literally banging on his back bumper and Jason White in
3rd doing the same to Marks. On lap 20 the banging became too much
for Pearce as Marks made contact with his rear bumper off of turn 4 sending
Pearce spinning. Marks slowed to avoid further contact allowing Jason White to
gain the lead. White proved to be an opportunist as he went on to claim the
victory in his #51 Southern Wake Auto
Monte Carlo
. Zachary Marks finished 2nd and extended his points lead in his #25
Shulz Iron Works, C&J Welding Monte Carlo. Tony Cooper brought home a strong
3rd place finish in his #7 Country Construction, Warrick Plumbing
Monte Carlo.
The Dunn Benson Super Late Model class refused to be
outdone by the Limited Late Models and they proceeded to put on a great show.
Walt Gibson put his #47 on the pole beside last weeks winner Big Jim Kelly in
his #K7. At the start, Kelly pulled a great move jumping to the lead over
Gibson, but Curtis Simpkins looped his #3 car around in turn 1 bringing out the
caution. Kelly restarted with Gibson right on his bumper and on lap 8 the
drivers made contact sending the K7 sideways, but Gibson appeared to let Kelly
gather it back up and neither driver lost or gained anything. On lap 12, things
took a dramatic turn as the cars headed into turn 3. Kelly and Gibson were nose
to tail as both cars lost control colliding with each other and the outside
wall. Charlie Stephenson put his dirt racing experience to use as he slid
sideways through the wreckage making contact with an already wrecked Gibson to
gain the lead with some rear end damage. The #3 of Simpkins, as well as the #55
of Kevin Floars, spun as well, but did not make contact with anything. Kelly,
Gibson, and Stephenson continued with damage to their cars. The cause of the
accident was believed to have been from a broken rear end on one of the other
cars leading to fluid on the track. The field went back to green for only a few
seconds as Charlie Stephenson looped his #85 off of turn 4 and smacked the
inside wall, handing the lead over to Randy Renfrow's #17. Renfrow showed
caution on the restart to ensure he did not repeat what happened to Stephenson.
Renfrow showed the way with Jonathan Logan pressing hard on him and smoke
rolling from the #85 of Charlie Stephenson. On lap 16,
Logan
moved his #21 past Renfrow for the lead. On lap 19, the smoke finally ceased on
Stephenson's car as the tire went flat and he spun in turn 1. Stephenson retired
as
Logan
restarted with Big Jim Kelly battling Renfrow for 2nd and finally
taking the spot away.
Logan
came home with the win in his #21 with Big Jim Kelly piloting his #K7 Cheap
Charlie's Floor Covering, Joey Grissin Racing Engines, CITGO Mini Mart, Amsoil
Chevrolet. Randy Renfrow brought his #17 Frazier Landscaping car home with a
solid 3rd place finish.
The final race of the evening was the Citgo Mini Mart 4
Cylinder double points race. Greg Carroll started on the pole beside rookie
Matthew Daley. Carroll quickly jumped out front and stayed there. Todd Langdon
quickly moved into 2nd place and attempted to catch the #15 machine
of Carroll, but to no avail. On lap 8, the #51 of Cory Walker spun off of turn 4
to slow the action. On lap 11, the #88 of Kevin Jeffries and the #33 of Jesse
Dukes made contact, sending the 88 around in turn 2. Cory Walker claimed his
second caution on lap 18 with a spin in turn 2 to slow the cars one more time.
Carroll restarted with the lead and maintained his position to win the race and
made weight in his #15 The A/C Company, Stancil Oil Co., Amoco Food Shops Ford.
Todd Langdon brought his #71 Walls Roofing Company, Langdon and McKenzie
Contractors Ford home in 2nd gaining the points lead. Rookie Matthew
Daley put together an impressive 3rd place run in his #9 Laser Plus
Inc., Jim Daley Hardwood Floors Inc Ford.
It was another exciting night at the track. Please joins us
this coming Friday for regular racing action with the 600 incorporated legend
cars and best appearing car judging for all classes.
Kelly Goes Wire to Wire
April 25, 2008
Opening night at Wake County Speedway is always an exciting time and the
David Champion Memorial race was no different. The evening started off with a
moment of silence and a few words for four of the people who went to be with the
Lord during the off season. These four people were Eugene Ward Williams, Anna
Marie Gray, Charlie Stephenson, and David Champion. The track showed it's
appreciation for David Champions contributions to the track and community by
introducing the “David Champion Sportsmanship Award” in the form of a cup
style trophy. The trophy will be handed out to a deserving driver later in the
season.
The racing action started with the CITGO Mini Mart 4
cylinder class. The field was set by two heat races earlier in the evening. The
most notable being the first which featured Wil Smith holding off an extremely
fast Greg Carroll in the closing laps despite some contact between the two which
continued with a minor bump after the heat race. Wil Smith led the field to the
green flag in his #32 Mustang with Rookie Daniel Vuncannon in the #50 on the
outside also in a Mustang. Daniel got a bad start and the field passed him on
both sides. Greg Carroll in the #15c
Mustang quickly moved to the point on lap 2 followed by Wil Smith. Carroll
extended his lead to over a straight
before the only caution of the race flew on lap 22 as Daniel Vuncannon spun his
#50 in turns 1 and 2 and made contact with the inside wall. Daniel retired from
the race leaving the field with a green white checkered finish. The Green flag
flew with Carroll leading Smith, Todd Langdon, and Jesse Duke. Greg Carroll
pulled away from the field and pulled his #15c Stancil Oil Company, The A/C
Company Ford Mustang onto the weighing scales first. The scales proved to be the
only thing that could stop Carroll as his car was declared too light and the win
was taken away. This gave Wil Smith in his #32 Smith Equipment Company, Accent
Imaging, Frankie Haddock race engines Mustang the win. The 2007 Modified Four
Cylinder champion Todd Langdon was scored 2nd in his #71 Walls
Roofing, Langdon and McKenzie Contactors Ford. Jesse Duke earns himself a 3rd
place finish in the #33 Duke’s Heating and Air Ford Mustang.
The North Carolina Iron Works Modified 4 Cylinder class
started with former champion Randy “Hotdog” Pearce on the pole in his #18
Ford with Sam “Showtime” Pacitti starting 2nd in his #43 Ford
Fusion. Kevin Floars did a great job coming up to 2nd place after
battling with Sam Pacitti and T.J Dillon for the spot. Despite some contact on
lap 1 with T.J Dillon’s #06, “Hotdog” Pearce claimed the victory in
dominating fashion with his Rolesville
Equipment Co. , Chassis Dynamics, Trans Medics Ford over Kevin Floars’
#55 Central Carolina Preowned, Just Tires Chevy SS. Sam “Showtime” Pacitti brought
home a 3rd place finish in his #43 D&V Repair, Bobby’s Welding
Service Ford Fusion.
The Harper’s Graphix Limited Late Model class proved to
be a class where the guy to have the least problems was going to win. Tony
Cooper looked to walk away from the field in his heat race until his car went
for a spin in turns 1&2 leaving him with a 4th place finish and
an 8th place starting spot in the main. Andy Wiley started from the
pole in his #66 Chevrolet with 2007 Rookie of the year Zachary Marks on the
outside pole in his #25 Chevrolet. Andy Wiley got out front and held the lead
early as Zachary Marks and William Pearce tried to stay with him. On lap 14,
Tony Cooper brought out the first caution with a self spin between turns 1 and
2. Tony failed to finish and was reported as having a brake failure. Andy Wiley
restarted and held the lead, but the caution flew again. On lap 16, Frankie
Dominick lost his driveshaft in turn 4 bringing out the caution and forcing him
to retire early. The green flew again with Andy Wiley leading and Marks
following closely. On lap 20, Lizzy Smith spun and came to a stop between turns
3 and 4 bringing out the final caution. Andy Wiley led for the next 7 laps
before Zachary Marks finally made the winning pass with 3 laps to go and brought
home the checkered flag in his #25 Shulz Iron Works, C & J Welding, B.
Pleasant Electric Chevrolet over Andy Wiley’s #66 Morrisey Mechanical Heating,
Mills Stone Setting Chevrolet which was later reported to have a cut tire in the
closing laps. Phil Richard brought home a strong 3rd place in his #5
Total Trac System, The Truck Shop Chevrolet.
The Dunn Benson Super Late Model drivers were prepared to
prove why they are the featured class at Wake County Speedway when they took to
the track. Big Jim Kelly took the pole with his K7. Walt Gibson started 2nd
on the starting grid beside Kelly. Kelly took the initial green flag over Gibson
and kept an eye in his mirror as Gibson followed. Lap 8 was the scene of the
first caution as Bradley Mccaskill spun in turns 1 and 2.
Kelly led the next 12 laps before the caution flew on lap 20. Jonathan
Logan got around in turn 2 after some tight racing with Charlie Stephenson which
may have lead to contact, but neither car was damaged. Charlie Stephenson put on
a great battle for 3rd with last years Champion Alex Fleming as Kelly
showed the way. Big Jim Kelly took the win in his K7 Cheap Charlie's Floor
Covering, Joey Grissin Racing Engines, CITGO Mini Mart, Amsoil Chevrolet never
taking his eye out of the mirror as he led every lap to claim the victory. Walt
Gibson piloted his #47 Chevrolet to a strong 2nd place finish
followed by Charlie Stephenson’s #85 Quality Lightning Protection Dodge in 3rd.
The Dirt Cheap Sand, Rock, and Mulch Ucars took to the
track last to start the newly formed Ucar Clash for Cash series. Albert Lamont
started on the pole with his #07 alongside Jason Capps’ #29. Jason
Capps jumped out to an early lead as drivers scrambled behind him for position.
Jessie Richardson Jr. looked strong as he moved into second place and began to
gain on Capps, but that strong run would come to an end on lap 42 of 50. The
caution flew as the #78 car went spinning. During the caution, Jessie Richardson
Jr. took his 7x machine to the pits with a lot of noise coming from under the
hood, ending his night. The green flew, but only for 1 lap as the #28 car
brought out the caution on lap 43 with a spin. The field went back to green for
5 more laps with Jason Capps leading until the #18 of Janet McCaskill got into
trouble in turn 4 bringing out the caution on lap 48. The restart only led to
another caution brought out by the 07 and 94 as they both got turned around in
turn 2 on the restart. Jason Capps restarted with a green white checkered and
picked up the first UCAR Clash for Cash win in his #29 Wise Recycling, Bakers
Transport, Pro Tint Chevrolet over 2nd place Ray Forest in his x7
Choice Electric, Quality Class Automobile. Rounding out the top 3 was the #21 of
Jimmy Horner.
It was a great night of racing to open up the 2008 season.
Join us this Friday night May 3rd for a regular racing program with
double points for the CITGO Mini Mart 4 Cylinder drivers. The Wake County
Speedway
Dirt Cheap Sand, Rock, and Mulch UCARS will also be in action, so come on out
and join us for a great show.

Stephenson
Wins, Fleming Crowned Champion
By Chad Williams
Raleigh, NC. -- 09/27/07 WCS report
The rubber has settled and the engines are cooled,
another season at Wake County Speedway has ended. Friday night was the final
race. This generally means guys will push the envelope a little more. The
racing action was exciting in the Dunn Benson super late model class as
“Chargin” Charlie Stephenson started on the pole and led the field to the
checkered in his Quality Lightning protection, Boyettes automotive Dodge.
Behind Stephenson drama was building from the start. Young Alex Fleming
Started 5th in his Joyner Traffic engineering Chevrolet, but on lap
1 he and the 51 of Jonathan Logan tried to use the same line and made contact.
Logan
’s car spun sending him to the rear of the field. Fleming continued on with
no harm to the car. On lap 24 the race took a big turn as Fleming tried to
make a move under the 55 of Kevin Floars and the two cars bounced off of each
other sending Floars hard into the outside wall destroying the rear body work
on his car. Floars clearly upset waited for the field to come around and may
have had a problem inside the car as he shot down into the right front of
Fleming. Floars was able to continue, but Fleming’s night was ended with
disappointment and frustration. Stephenson picked up the win followed by
Logan
fighting back to 2nd in his E.W Williams Ford, Matt Jones 3rd,
Jason White 4th in his first start in Super Late models, and Bruce
Martin rounding out the top 5. A special Congratulations to Alex Fleming on
becoming the youngest super late model champion in Wake County Speedway
history.
In the North Carolina Iron Works modified 4 cylinder
class it was “Showtime”. That’s right Sam “Showtime” Pacitti picked
up the win in his D& V repair ford. On lap 1 the 63 of Dennis Capps
dropped debris on the track bringing out the caution. The race went green for
the remainder of the race and on lap 21 the 06 of T.J Dillon suffered engine
trouble leaving him out of the race early. Pacitti held of champion Todd
Langdon and his #78 Powertek Pressure washing, capital city lumber ford for
the win. Dennis Capps finished 3rd, Rookie Matt Denton finished a
strong 4th, and the 75 of Anthony Parker came home 5th.
The Harper Graphix limited late model class saw a great
battle between Keith Oliver and Rookie of the Year Zachary Marks for the win.
Marks and Oliver swapped the lead a few times between the two and it appeared
to be a great race. On lap 17 thinks went bad for Marks as Oliver got to his
rear bumper and may have taken the air off his spoiler or made contact sending
marks spinning. This was the only caution of the race and Oliver cruised on to
win in his Precast Terrazzo Enterprises Chevrolet. Phil Richards finally found
a little good luck after a tough season and finished 2nd in his
Total track system Chevrolet. Zachary Marks showed why he was crowned rookie
of the year as he fought back to a 3rd place finish. The 78 of
William Pierce came home 4th followed bye the 39 of C.J. Faison in
another return visit for the young man.
The Citgo Mini Mart four cylinder class was all about the
man in black. Jessie Richardson Jr who has fought hard all year to claim his
first track championship picked up yet another win in his black 7x Walls
Roofing, Langdon & Mckenzie, Logan’s Roadhouse sponsored ford. Jessie
took the lead early and never looked back as the battles were all behind him.
The 51 Advance auto, Johnny’s pizza Ford driven by Chris Privette fought his
way to the back bumper of
Richardson
, but was unable to do anything with him. Former champion Chad Wall made a
return visit to he track and made a great showing as he finished 3rd,
4th place belonged to the #22 of Jason Steinbushin, rounding out
the top 5 was the LT1 of Lizzy Smith.
The Dirt Cheap Sand, Rock & Mulch UCar class had a
small field, but put on a great show. Only 3 cars started the race and with
Barry McCaskill driving a #18 it looked as though he would walk away with the
win easily, but Jason Beck gave McCaskill all he could handle. McCaskill and
Beck ran side by side swapping the lead for most of the race, but it ended up
being McCaskill who brought his B & B Fab works car home to the win just
ahead of Beck in his U-Turn to Jesus ford. This was McCaskill’s first time
back in a car at
Wake
County
,but he looked right at home. Beck overcame battery problems before the race
to finish 2nd. Calvin
hicks ended up driving a different car than he had planned after a hard crash
in practice destroyed his primary car. Hick Finished 3rd behind McCaskill
and Beck.
Stephenson’s
bad luck helps Jones win
By Chad Williams
Raleigh, NC. -- 09/09/07 WCS report
On a night where champions were to be crowned it was Matt
Jones Piloting his #70 L.D. Morgan plumbing Chevrolet to the win in the Dunn
Benson ford super late model race. The race started out with Curtis Simpkins
looping his #3 Chevrolet in turn 1 bringing out the first caution. After the
restart it looked as though Charlie Stephenson was well on his way to another
victory, Charlie pulled away from the field in his #85 Dodge and stayed there
until lap 24. On lap 24 Walt Gibson and newcomer to the late model division
Zachary Marks found each other off of turn 2, Gibson’s car jumped the left
rear of Marks’ and slammed hard into the inside wall ending his night. Marks
was able to continue, but finally parked the car later in the event. On the
restart it appeared something broke on Charlie Stephenson’s car allowing
Matt Jones to pass him for the lead. Jones would pull away from the field and
pick up a well earned win. Alex Fleming picked up 2nd position in
the race, but after 8 wins claims his first Super Late Model Championship in
his #05 Chevy. Jonathan Logan finished 3rd followed by Kevin Floars
4th and Curtis Simpkins 5th. Charlie Stephenson Failed
to finish and was credited with 6th.
The North
Carolina Iron Works Modified 4 Cylinder Class proved to be a tough win for T.J.
Dillon in his #06 Fuquay Embroidery Ford. On lap 2 the #19 of Michael Tabler
appeared to lose control of his car and spun in turn 2 bringing out the first
caution with Sam Pacitti leading. Lap 14 saw a hard battle between #9 Kenny
Tabler and #63 Dennis Capps lead to the 2nd and final caution of
the race as both cars found the same spot on the track and made contact
sending both cars around. T.J Dillon made his way to the back bumper of
Pacitti late in the race and with only a few laps to go gave Pacitti a slight
nudge out of the way and putting himself in the lead. Dillon held on for the
win followed by Sam Pacitti in the #43 D&V Repair service Ford. Todd
Langdon Picked up the 3rd place and took home his 2nd
Championship in 2 years. Keith Weatherly finished 4th with Dennis
Capps rounding out the top 5.
The Harper Graphix Limited Late Model Class proved to be
another great battle between Keith Oliver and Jason White. Keith Oliver jumped
to the early lead, but on lap 4 racing was slowed for the #70 of Richard
Abernathy spinning in turn two and hitting the inside wall. The next Yellow
came out for the #78 of William Pierce spinning in turn 3 and the #03 of
Frankie Dominick running into the side of Pierce. The 66 of Andy Wiley spun on
lap 17 bringing out another yellow. Jason White piloted his #51 Apple
insurance Chevrolet past Keith Oliver after the restart to pick up yet another
win and his first championship at
Wake
County
. Young Zachary Marks finished 2nd in his Tammy’s Day Care
Chevrolet followed by the #5 of Phil Richard 3rd, Keith Oliver 4th
after contact with Marks on the last lap, and the #01 of Scott Liles 5th
in his return to the track.
The Citgo Mini Mart 4 Cylinder Class had lots of
excitement on and off the track with rumors flying as to why former Modified 4
Cylinder driver Steve Smith was running in the class and changing cars more
often than some fans changed drinks. Smith would start the night in the LT1x
car during the heat race formerly driven by his daughter Lizzy Smith. Steve
ended up driving the #22 car for the main race and didn’t impress many with
his DNF. The race started out wildly and didn’t let up. On lap 3, contact
between the #62 of Michael Woodard, #2 of Timmy Robbins and #81 of Josh Harper
left Woodard on the trailer for the remainder of the race with Harper and
Robbins able to continue. On lap 8 it was Kevin Jeffrey’s #8 losing an
engine leaving oil on the track. The 14 of Shotgun Miller found the oil and
spun in turn 4 bringing out the yellow. On lap 15 the #23 of Elliott Jewell
and 5 of Crystal Cooper collided sending Cooper violently into the inside
wall. On lap 20 the 7X of Jessie Richardson Jr had charged to 2nd
after starting last. Richardson Jr appeared to give David Champions #66 a
slight nudge sending Champion around. Behind this the LT1X, 22, and 2 all made
contact leaving the 22 of Steve Smith with a flat tire and out of the race.
The 2 of Timmy Robbins had heavy front end damage and retired. Richardson Jr
would cruise on to another win and his first 4 cylinder Championship in the 7x
Walls Roofing Ford. Josh Harper drove his #81 Truelove Catering Ford to a 2nd
place finish followed by Lizzy Smith 3rd, Matt Privitte 4th,
and the LT1X 5th possibly driven by Jason Steinbreshur.
The Dirt Cheap Sand, Rock and Mulch Ucar Race being
sponsored by Walls Roofing for the night proved to be a real kick to watch.
Eric Keck who won the last big Ucar race charged to the front and battled hard
with the #08 of Kevin Manning before Keck picked up the win in his #22 Fleming
Body shop Ford. Manning finished 2nd followed by the #55 of David
Foreman 3rd, #48 of Rush Spronger 4th, and #74 of Ronnie
Deveva 5th.
The final race of the night was the Powder Puff and it
proved to be just as rough and tumble as the rest of the races. The closing
laps saw the LT1X driven by Lizzy’s mom battling side by side with the #81
driven by Josh Harpers sister that ended with both cars spinning themselves
and the #81 slamming hard into the outside wall. The 7x driven by Rose
Richardson was happy to take the lead and cruise to the win.
Congrats to all the winners and our new champions: Jason
White, Jessie Richardson Jr, Alex Fleming, and Todd Langdon. We have 1 more
race left in the schedule and it will be a regular racing event with awards
being handed out to the drivers at the conclusion of the night.
Logan
takes
advantage of second chance
By Chad Williams
Raleigh, NC. -- 08/26/07 WCS report
In the Dunn Benson Ford super late model race, Jonathan
Logan picked up his first win in the division despite being knocked sideways
before the green flag was waved. Coming to the green flag,
Logan
’s E.W Williams construction Ford was bumped from behind turning him
sideways and leading to a restart.
Logan
took advantage of the second chance and jumped from his 2nd
starting spot to lead every lap. Alex Fleming started on the pole and ran 2nd
until mechanical failure ended his night on lap 23. Last weeks winner Charlie
Stephenson seemed to have lost his lucky horseshoe and made hard contact with
the inside wall off of turn 2 on lap 4 after contact from Kevin Floars. During
the caution, Stephenson had a short discussion about what happened with Floars.
Logan
picked up the checkered flag followed by Matt Jones in his Stephenson Motor
sports Chevy. Kevin Floars came home 3rd followed by Curtis
Simpkins 4th and Bruce Martin 5th.
In The North Carolina Iron Works modified 4 cylinder
class, it was all Todd Langdon. Langdon piloted his Powertek pressure washing
Ford to a slight victory over Kenny Tablers American home entertainment Ford.
Tabler followed Langdon’s tire tracks the entire race but was never able to
take a shot at the lead. The racing was slowed on the first lap by Keith
Oliver’s spin in turn 1 but no contact was made and he was able to continue.
On lap 9, Sam Pacitti, Michael Tabler, and Dennis Capps all got involved in an
accident that left Pacitti and Tabler with sheet metal damage. Dennis
Capps finished a strong 3rd with Keith Oliver 4th and
Michael Tabler rounding out the top 5.
In The Harper Graphix limited late model class, it was
Zachary Marks making it 2 in a row thanks to some hard racing between Jason
White and Keith Oliver. Keith Oliver took the early lead over Jason White.
After a lap 2 caution for Phil Richards spinning due to contact with Frankie
Dominick, it looked like a great battle was going to lead to a great finish.
Oliver held White at bay until lap 13 when the two made contact going into
turn 1. Oliver’s car hit hard into the outside wall ending his night. White
was able to continue but couldn’t catch Zachary Marks in his Shulz Iron
Works, C & J Welding of Fuquay Chevrolet. White brought his Apple
Insurance Chevy home 2nd building his points lead farther. James
Frazier made a return to the speedway and finished a strong 3rd.
Phil Richards recovered to finish 4th with Frankie Dominick coming
home 5th.
The Citgo mini mart 4 cylinder class saw Jessie
Richardson Jr win his 6th race in a row but the action behind him
was definitely worth watching. Shotgun Miller brought out the first caution on
lap 2 as he spun, but made no contact and continued. Only 1 lap later Jessie
Richardson Sr spun after contact from behind bringing out the 2nd
caution. Richardson Sr and Corey Walker made contact on lap 3 leaving
Walker
with heavy damage and the 3rd yellow of the race. The race appeared
to have the green flag flavor until Josh Harper and Lizzy Smith found each
other off of turn 2. Smith went under Harper for the position and the two made
heavy contact on the backstretch sending Smith hard into the outside wall
ending her night. Richardson Jr missed a shift on the restart but quickly
recovered and never lost the lead, bringing his Walls Roofing, Langdon &
Mckenzie Ford home to victory for the 9th time this season. David
Champion took a shot at Richardson Jr when he missed a shift but had to settle
for 2nd in his Red Star Toyota. Josh Harper finished 3rd
after his accident with Lizzy Smith. Matt Privette finished 4th
followed by Timmy Robbins returning to the track to finish 5th.
Stephenson Charges to Victory
By Chad Williams
Raleigh, NC. -- 08/19/07 WCS report
The man known at Wake county
speedway as “Charging” Charlie Stephenson took his Quality lightning
protection dodge to victory lane after an early spin in the Dunn Benson Ford
super late model race . Stephenson, Curtis Simpkins, and Kevin Floars all spun
on lap 6 bringing out a caution. Stephenson battled back to 2nd
behind Alex Fleming. Stephenson then battled hard with Alex Fleming for
several laps for the lead before finally completing the pass on lap 35. Alex
Fleming Started on the pole with a lap of 12.75, but a blown motor on lap 44
ended his night. Jonathan Logan brings home his E.W Williams ford in 2nd
followed by Kevin Floars 3rd, Matt Jones 4th, and Bruce
martin in 5th.
In the Harpers Graphix
limited late model race Zachary Marks proved to everyone he can get the job
done. Marks held off current points leader and multi feature winner Jason
White to bring the #25 Schulz iron works, C&J welding Chevrolet to victory
lane for the first time in his first season of stock car racing. White brought
his #51 Apple insurance, Advance auto parts Chevrolet 2nd
followed by, Keith Oliver 3rd, CJ Faison 4th in
his return visit from Delaware, and Andy Wiley 5th.
The North Carolina iron
works modified 4 cylinder race saw Todd Langdon pilot his #78 Powertek
pressure washing ford to yet another victory. Kenny Tabler who had won the
last 2 races in the class failed to start the main event and helped Langdon
pad his points lead. T.J Dillon brought his #06 home with a strong 2nd
place finish followed by, Sam Pacitti in 3rd, Michael Tabler 4th,
and Dennis Capps 5th.
In the Citgo mini mart 4
cylinder class it was all Jessie Richardson Jr again. Richardson piloted his
7x Walls Roofing, Langdon & Mckenzie Incorporated ford to his 8th
win of the season and 5th in a row. David Champion brought his #66
Red Star oil Toyota home 2nd followed by, Lizzy Smith in 3rd,
Josh Harper 4th after an early spin, and Matthew Privette 5th.
The Ucar class proved to be
the Eric Keck show. Keck jumped out front in his #22 and walked away with his
2nd win of the season. The battle was really for 2nd.
Mike hair piloted his #20 to a 2nd place finish followed by Calvin
Hicks 3rd, and Mike Shannon 4th.

Fleming Continues His Winning Ways
By Chad Williams
Raleigh, NC. -- 08/10/07 WCS report
Young Alex Fleming of Raleigh has now become the driver to beat in the Dunn
Benson super late model division in the Fleming Motor sports 05 Chevy. Alex
started on the pole Friday night and held off Apex's Jonathan Logan to pick up
another win. Jonathan and Alex battled side by side for 3 laps before Alex was
able to complete the pass moments before a caution broke out on lap 4 for
contact between Walt Gibson and Matt Jones. Logan would make another attempt to
get around Fleming, but would settle for 2nd by a few car lengths. Matt Jones
continued on and finished 3rd, while Walt finally parked his car due to the
damage. Charlie Stephenson came home 4th with Kevin Floars rounding out the top
5.
In the North Carolina Iron works Modified 4 cylinder division, Kenny Tabler of
Garner found victory lane for the 2nd time this season after sitting on the
pole. Tabler put his American Home Entertainment, Allen Kelly Heating and Air
Ford Fusion out front on the first lap and stayed there. Todd Langdon qualified
2nd and would finish there by less than a car length after following Tabler for
the entire race. Langdon made a great attempt on the last lap to pass Tabler,
but came up a little short. Michael Tabler put together a great 3rd place run
followed by, Dennis Capps in 4Th, and Matthew Denton in 5Th.
The Harper Graphix limited late model class saw a lot of action and a new face
in victory lane, but that was short lived. William Pearce Started on the pole,
but Tony Cooper of coats shot from the 2nd place starting position to the lead
on the first lap of the feature. It didn't take long for the sparks to fly, on
lap 2 Jason white was battling with Williams Pearce for 2nd and it appeared some
contact was made between the two leading to Jason making contact with the
outside wall and blowing a right front tire. Behind him cars began to stack up
and those involved included, Keith Oliver, Richard Abernathy, Andy Wiley, and
Jim Place. Tony Cooper Led for the next 6 laps and then on lap 8 lost control of
his Country Construction Chevrolet off of turn 4 handing the lead to William
Pearce. William Pearce Held off a late charge from Keith Oliver to collect his
first victory, but post race inspection led to Keith Oliver picking up the win.
Zachary Marks get credit for 2nd followed by Phil Richards 3rd, and Andy Wiley
4th.
In the Citgo Mini Mart 4 cylinder class it was all Jessie Richardson Jr.
Richardson Led every lap en route to his 7th victory of the season. Josh Harper
came home 2nd followed by David Champion 3rd, Lizzy Smith 4Th after a spin on
lap 14, and Jessie Richardson Sr 5th.
In the 600 inc Legends Billy Gomez Jr picked up another win after an early
accident put him back in the field. Norman Perry Jumped to the lead after
starting 2ND, but on lap 7 Billy Gomez Jr got around Perry on the backstretch.
Perry attempted to do a cross-over and made contact with Gomez sending Gomez
spinning. Legends officials sent Perry to the rear of the field for the
incident. Gomez Stormed through the field and regained the lead on lap 13 and
cruised to victory. Frank Morgan finished 2nd followed by Jason Holshauser 3rd,
Norman Perry 4th, and Chris Pierce 5th.
The Grocery Boy Jr Law enforcement night was not one to miss. All officers in
attendance were honored including Sheriff Donnie Harrison who was in attendance
and Fallen officer Mark Tucker. Most Popular driver awards were handed out and

in Limited Late Model, and a tie in the Super late model class led to co-winners
Charlie Stephenson and Alex Fleming.

Fleming on a roll at Wake County
By Wake County Staff Reporter
A clear favorite has finally broken out of the pack at
Wake County Speedway in the Dunn Benson Ford Super
Late Model division. Alex Fleming of Raleigh claimed
his fourth win of the season Friday night, leading
every circuit of the 50-lap main event for the
powerful racecars after setting a qualifying time of
12.71 seconds.
For the second week in a row, points leader Chargin'
Charlie Stephenson crashed out of the event. This
week, contact with Bradley McCaskill put Stephenson in
the pits on only the second lap.
Legend Big Jim Kelly keeps inching his K-7 Monte Carlo
closer to his first victory of the season at the .23
mile track, but had to settle for second again last
night. A marked improvement over the past few races
for hometown favorite Curtis Simpkins continued this
week as he placed third in his orange #3. Matt Jones
finished fourth and Scott Carroll rounded out the top
five.
In a big double points event for the Harper's Graphix
Limited Late Model cars, Jason White recovered from
two bad weeks in a row to win his fifth feature event
of the season. After qualifying on the pole with a lap
of 13.64, White dominated the event from start to
finish in the Apple Auto Insurance, Advance Auto
mount. Keith Oliver, who has won the last two races at
the track, crashed early in the event on the
backstretch and finished a disappointing 11th. Andy
Wiley posted another good finish, rolling to second
place. Brandon Ennis recovered from a spectacular
wreck with White last week to finish third. Jim Place
posted a career best finish in fourth and Lance Morgan
took his first top five ever after moving from
go-karts.
Todd Langdon won his second feature in a row in the
North Carolina Iron Works Pro Mod class. Last year's
champion took the Powertek Ford Taurus to victory lane
after qualifying on the pole. Chris Privette had
another strong showing in the #51 Ford Probe to finish
second. Dennis Capps finished third, Keith Weatherly
fourth and Matthew Denton scored his first top five.
After spinning from the lead on the last lap last week
in the Citgo Mini Mart Stock Four class, T.J. Dillon
won his first race of the year Friday in the #51
Advance Auto, Apple Auto Insurance Mustang. Last
week's winner Jessie Richardson Jr. was second, David
Champion third, Lizzy Smith fourth and Aaron Champion
fifth.
Young Gun
Alex Fleming Makes It Three Wins
When Alex Fleming started the season in the Dunn
Benson Ford Super Late Model class he had never won a
race at Wake County. Now, the young driver has won
more features than anyone else this season.
Fleming outpaced former track champion Big Jim Kelly
to take the victory in the 50-lap feature event,
leading the later half of the race. Kelley finished
second, Curtis Simpkins third and Joe Heigl fourth.
Rounding out the top five was Chris Bowers from Washington NC.
In the North Carolina Iron Works Pro Mod class 2006
champion Todd Langdon won his first race of the season
in the 30-lap feature. Kenny Tabler drove home in
second spot. A strong finish for Keith Weatherly in third
with Chris Priviett and Dennis Capps finishing
in fourth and fifth.
The Harper’s Graphix Limited Late Model race
looked
more like a demolition derby, with few cars finishing
the 30-lap feature event. Keith Oliver again outlasted
the field for his fourth victory of the year. Andy
Wiley, after coming from the rear of the field twice,
drove his battered machine home in second place.
Richard Abernathy was third and Zach Marks fourth.
Coming to the finish line in fifth was Frankie Domnick.
Points leader Jason White, Brandon Ennis and Phil
Richards all crashed while racing for the lead in the
first heat race.
In the Citgo Mini Mart Stock Four feature Jessie
Richardson Jr. overcame a first lap spin to win
another race this year, keeping the points lead firmly
in his grasp. After contact with T.J. Dillon filling
in for an injured Matthew Privette, Richardson had no
problems running down the pack and forcefully taking
the lead away from Dillon on the final circuit of the
race. David Champion slipped by to take second place
and Josh Harper finished third. Good run for Aaron Champion
finishing fourth with Leo Davis finishing in fifth.
In the U-Car event, Philip Daniels won his second
straight feature event. Calvin Hicks finished second,
Ashley Smith third and Jason Beck fourth.
Fleming Wins Again at Wake County
By: Wake County Staff Reporter
It was a battle of attrition Friday night at Wake County Speedway, but Alex Fleming of Raleigh easily cruised to his second victory of the season in the Dunn Benson Ford Super Late Model class.
Fleming, who started on the second row in the 11-car field, passed front row teammates Jonathan Logan and Jim Eubanks early in the race to take the lead and never looked back. Behind Fleming, however, trouble was brewing for most of the evening on the slick .23 mile speedway. Raleigh's Joe Heigl, who had to start in the rear after leaving the track during qualifying to repair a broken suspension piece, worked his way up to forth place before tangling with a fading Eubanks. Another late race incident between Heigl, Kevin Floars, and Matt Jones left several cars sidelined.
Last week's winner, Chargin' Charlie Stephenson, took a stab at Fleming during a late race restart but had to settle for second. Logan was fourth, Walt Gibson fifth and Heigl's battered car rounded out the top five.
In the North Carolina Iron Works Pro Mod division, Steve Smith continued his stranglehold on the class with another wire to wire victory. The North Carolina Iron Works Fusion dominated the race, his only challenge being lapped traffic. Chris Privette had another strong run in second place, Kenny Tabler finished third, Todd Langdon Fourth and Dennis Capps was fifth.
In the Harper's Graphix Limited Late Model division, Keith Oliver won his third race of the season in the #18 Chevy Monte Carlo. After winning his heat race, Oliver faced a showdown against four-time winner Jason White. However, Oliver pulled away from White for another victory. Brandon Ennis finished third after driving from the rear of the field, Zack Marks was fourth and Andy Wiley fifth.
In the Citgo Mini Mart Stock Four class, Wil Smith returned for the first time this year as a relief driver for injured Matt Privette to win the 25-lap feature event in the #51 Apple Auto Insurance Mustang. Points leader Jessie Richardson Jr. finished second, David Champion third, Nick Floars fourth and Lizzy Smith fifth.
In the U-Car feature, Philip Daniels won his first career race. Jason Beck finished second, Calvin Hicks third and Mike Shannon fourth.
Stephenson first two-time winner of 2007 at Wake
County
Wake County Staff Reporter
It was only fitting that the first winner of the 2007
season would also become the first repeat winner of
the year at Wake County Speedway. Chargin' Charlie
Stephenson, who started in the middle of the field
during Friday's 50-lap Dunn Benson Ford Super Late
Model event, worked his way through traffic to break a
streak of five different winners.
After a second lap caution thrown for Joe Heigl's
spinning #15 car and a debris caution on lap 12, it
was a scramble through the pack for the driver of the
#85 Quality Lightning Protection Dodge Intrepid.
Pole sitter and last week's winner Alex Fleming
suffered overheating problems during the second
caution and retired for the evening while leading.
That left Big Jim Kelly's K-7 machine on the point
until lap 29 when the Ford driven by Jonathan Logan
took the lead. It looked as if there would be another
first time winner as Logan paced the field, but
Stephenson would not be denied. The Raleigh driver
passed Logan with five laps remaining to take his
second victory of the season.
"A lot of them were loose, and I was loose as well,"
Stephenson said, reflecting on his battle through
traffic in victory lane. "I'm just adapting to the
tires a little more. I think they are starting to get
softer than they were at the beginning of the year."
Logan held on to second for his best finish of the
year, while Kelly, Matt Jones and Walt Gibson
completed the top five.
In the biggest race of the season for the Citgo
Mini-Mart Stock Four cars, the full moon overhead made
itself evident by the fireworks on the track. Jessie
Richardson Jr. pulled out to an early lead over pole
sitter Matthew Privette and appeared to be the class
of the field. However, a tangle with a lapped car on
the 22nd circuit of the 50-lap race erupted into
chaos. Richardson and Elliott Jewel spun in Turn 3,
also collecting the second place car of Privette and
the third place car of David Champion. The entire side
of Richardson's 7x Wall's Roofing Pinto was ripped to
shreds, Champion suffered suspension damage and a flat
tire and Privette suffered the worst damage with a
possible broken wrist from the jolt.
In an odd twist of events, Privette's brother Chris
stepped into the battered car and tangled with Jessie
Richardson Jr.'s damaged machine shortly after the
ensuing restart. It looked to be another great points
night for young Lizzy Smith, but a crash with another
car while running in second place put her several laps
behind the pace.
After all the smoke cleared, Champion worked his way
back through the field and passed Josh Harper's
Mustang for the lead. After two flat tires, a missing
hood and minor suspension damage, Champion was pleased
to place his Red Star Oil #66 in victory lane. Harper
finished second, while Richardson finished third in
his crumpled racecar to unofficially regain the points
lead.
In the North Carolina Iron Works Pro Mod race, Steve
Smith regained his footing after a last lap crash a
week earlier to win yet another 30-lap feature event.
Smith paced the field and never looked back. Contact
with a smoking Kenny Tabler put a damper on Dennis
Capps? strong run. Last week's winner Chris Privette
moved to second from his fourth starting position but
never could make a move on Smith. Todd Langdon
finished third, Greg Hicks wound up fourth and Sam
Pacitti rounded out the top five finishers.
Keith Oliver took his second Harper's Graphix Limited
Late Model race of the year, capitalizing on the
misfortune of pole setter Jason White. After winning
four races this season, White's rear end broke during
opening pace laps for the feature event. Oliver made
short work of outside pole setter Brandon Ennis and
took off, never relinquishing the lead. Ennis cruised
home to a second place finish while Andy Wiley and
Phil Richard finished third and fourth.
In 600 Inc. Legends action, Brad Arthurs held off a
charge by last year's champion Billy Gomez to claim
victory. Brandon Temple finished third in the 25-lap
feature.
Another First
Time Winner at Wake County Speedway
Wake County Staff Reporter
Raleigh's Alex Fleming claimed his first ever win
Friday night at Wake County Speedway, driving to the
front of the pack in the Dunn Benson Ford Super Late
Model feature. His win marks the fifth different
winner in as many races this year in the speedway's
most prestigious class.
Fleming marched through the field in his black and
green #05 Monte Carlo and never looked back as he
passed Walt Gibson for first in the 50-lap feature.
Last week's winner, Kevin Floars looked to have
another strong run going but bowed out early with
engine trouble.
Fleming said the race win was special, not only
because it was his first, but because his grandmother
was in the stands. The family team came close to
victory last week, finishing in second place.
Following post race inspection, Joe Heigl of Raleigh
was awarded second in his Chevy Monte Carlo with Matt
Jones in third. Charlie Stephenson, and Big Jim Kelly
rounded out the top five.
A wild finish in the North Carolina Iron Works Pro Mod
race got the fans on their feet. After a lap car spun
on lap two of the 30-lap event, leaders Steve Smith
and Todd Langdon tangled coming out of turn four.
Since the caution had been displayed before the two
were collected, they were placed back out front.
However, after 29 laps, the two would once again see
turn four at the tricky .23 mile speedway. Coming out
of the last corner, the two collided while racing for
the lead, sidelining both. With only a few yards left
to the finish line, the trio of Chris Privette, Dennis
Capps and Sam Pacitti stormed towards the flag and the
victory. It was Privette who crossed the line just
before Capps, with Pacitti winding up third.
Privette, who was last year's champion in the Stock
Four Class, was ecstatic to celebrate a win in his
Advance Auto Parts, Apple Auto Insurance Ford Probe.
Langdon and Smith ended up finishing fourth and fifth
in the final rundown.
In the Harper's Graphix Limited Late Model Race, Jason
White once started up front and lead all of the 30-lap
feature. The Apple Auto Insurance Monte Carlo took the
checkered flag with cars piling up around him on the
last lap. Second went to Andy Wiley, third was rookie
Zach Marks with his best career finish, fourth went to
Richard Abernathy and fifth Brandon Ennis.
David Champion posted a second win in a row in the
Citgo Mini Mart Stock Four class. After starting
second, Champion motored past Jessie Richardson Jr.'s
#7x Ford Pinto early and cruised to the win. Josh
Harper, who won a race earlier in the season, stormed
to second place past Richardson, who wound up in
third. Nick Floars posted another top-five finish with
a fourth and points leader Lizzy Smith finished fifth
with smoke showing from her car in the waning laps.
In the Dirt Cheap Sand and Mulch U-Car Class, side by
side racing was the order of the night through the
field, but Junior Edmonson was in a league of his own
for most of the evening. The #7 Cavalier stared last
but finished first for the second race in a row in the
new class. Philip Daniels finished second in his Wake
County racing debut. Jason Beck finished third, Ashley
Smith fourth and Calvin Hicks placed fifth.
Floars takes first Wake County Win
Wake County Staff Reporter
May 18, 2007
Kevin Floars sought redemption Friday night at Wake County
Speedway, after losing the lead late in the race a week before.
This week driver #55 claimed a hard fought Super Late Model win
at the historic Raleigh bullring. Floars' victory, his first in the speedway's
most prestigious class, continued the streak of new winners in the Dunn
Benson
Ford Super Late Model cars with no driver taking a repeat trip to
victory lane
this season. Raleigh's Joe Heigl, who passed Floars with three
laps to go
last week claimed his first win of the season, started on the pole
and led early
in the 50 lap feature. Though Floars followed him lap after lap,
he waited to
make his move. Raleigh's Alex Fleming drove his #05 Monte
Carlo past both Floars
and Heigl to the lead just after the halfway point, but
couldn't hold on. Floars
passed Heigl for second and set his sites on Fleming,
passing him and taking the
victory. Fleming wound up in second in the race
with Chargin' Charlie
Stephenson crossing the line in third, Heigl fourth and
Walt Gibson in fifth.
In the North Carolina Iron Works Pro Mod class, Steve
Smith once again took his LT1 Ford Fusion to victory
lane, never seeing a challenge from any of the
competition. Once again starting on the front row,
Smith motored around the .23 mile track at an
impressive pace. Garner's Dennis Capps, the only
driver to beat Smith so far this season, left the race
early in a cloud of smoke and oil. Last year's Stock
Four champion Chris Privette motored his Ford Probe to
second place and mounted a charge on Smith but was
denied the top spot. Last year's champion Todd Langdon
finished third, Kenny Tabler finished fourth and Greg
Hicks rounded out the top five.
Jason White claimed his second consecutive victory of
the season in the Harper's Graphix Limited Late Model
class after first winning a qualifying race earlier in
the evening. After a botched start to the race, White
pulled away to a comfortable lead and was never
challenged. Hard racing between Andy Wiley and Frankie
Dominck Jr. led to a head-on collision with the inside
barrier for Dominck. Keith Oliver motored his #18 to a
second place finish after a lap-1 spin that sent him
to the rear of the field. Wiley wound up in third
place.
In the Citgo Mini Mart Stock Four race, a late race
altercation between points leader Jessie Richardson
Jr. of Knightdale and Matthew Privette allowed David
Champion to slip around the pair to cross the
checkered flag first. Contact from Privette sent
Richardson?s car head on into the outside wall
airborne, destroying what has been one of the fastest
cars all year. Privette's car was also forced out of
contention for the second week in a row. Champion took
advantage of the misfortune and will be declared the
winner pending a post race inspection. Lizzy Smith,
the 12-year-old rookie, finished second and should now
be leading the points standings. Nick Floars finished
third and Leo Davis was fourth.
Virginia's William "Sparky" West claimed his first win
in his first ever start at Wake County Speedway in the
600 Inc. Legends feature. After leaders Billy Gomez
Jr. and Brad Sutton collided, Pro Driver West took the
lead and never looked back. Pro Brandon Temple
finished second, Pro Kurt Crosbie third while Master
Gomez and Pro Sutton rounded out the top five.

Joe Heigl of
Raleigh
held on to win his first Dunn
Benson Ford Super Late Model race of the season Friday
night at Wake County Speedway in what was a wild night
of racing action. Kevin Floars paced the race in the #55
Monte Carlo
, but with three laps to go Heigl made a last ditch pass
for the win. Heigl’s Performance Auto Body Monte Carlo held
off Charlie Stepehnson, Floars and Randy Renfrow at
the finish of the 50 lap main event.
In the North Carolina Iron Works Pro Mod division,
Steve Smith dominated the race, leading wire to wire
for the win. The North Carolina Iron Works LT1 car
grabbed the pole for the third time this season and
never looked back. Todd Langdon, last year’s points
champion, finished second in the race, with only challenging
Smith in lapped traffic. Chris Privette finished third.
Defending race winner Dennis Capps of Garner spun his #63
Thunderbird early, ruining his chances of a repeat victory.
Jason White claimed his second victory of the season
in the Harper’s Graphix Limited Late Model cars. The
Apple Auto Insurance, Advance Auto Monte Carlo was in
perfect form, pacing both his heat race and the 30-lap
feature. Frankie Dominck Jr., who won the second heat
race of the evening, suffered from engine woes and did
not complete the race. When it was all said and done
Keith Oliver finished second with Brandon Ennis third.
Zackary Marks the 15 year old from Angier with his best
finish of the season in fourth.
In the Citgo Mini Mart Stock Four race, Josh Harper
outlasted a wreck filled field to claim his first
victory of the season. Leaders Jessie Richardson Jr.,
David Champion and Matthew Privette all suffered
accidents, handing Harper the lead. 12-year-old Lizzie
Smith posted her best career finish, coming back
through the field after a late race accident to finish
second. Great finishes for the #3 John Couch and #21
Jeremy Ottaway rounding out third and forth position.
In The Dirt Cheap U-Car class, Junior Edmondson won
his first ever race at Wake County Speedway after
dominating much of the season this year at nearby
Southern National
Speedway
. 15 year old Mike Shannon
in his first UCAR start finished second with Jason Beck
and Calvin Hicks finishing third and forth.

Emotional Night as Capps, Jones
Take Big Victories.
Wake County Staff
Though Super Late Model cars were billed as the
feature event Friday night at Wake County Speedway, it
was a driver in the Pro-Mod division who stole the
show. Dennis Capps, less than a week after the passing
of his brother and fellow racer Larry Capps, was bound
and determined to win at any cost.
Capps, of Clayton, qualified fourth in the North
Carolina Iron Works Feature event and looked to be a
long shot to win over last week's winner, Steve Smith
of Fuquay-Varina. However, before the race Capps made
it apparent he was going to drive harder than ever
before to win in honor of his brother.
He quickly drove from fourth to second, and on a
restart after a late race accident, Capps piloted his
#63 Ford Thunderbird to the back of Steve Smith's Lt1
car. On lap 22, Capps made contact with Smith in turn
2, sending Smith spinning, Capps to the lead and the
fans in an uproar of applause.
The #63 went on to lead the final eight laps of the
race taking the checkered flag. He gave an emotional
speech in victory lane.
"I won this race for Larry Capps," he said. "Larry
didn't make it but he was here with me in this car
with me helping me drive it."
Kenny Tabler of Cleveland finished second in the event
with Todd Langdon, Smith and Matt Privette rounding
out the top five.
In the Dunn Benson Ford Super Late Model Class, Matt
Jones of Goldsboro kept it in the family to claim the
big check. Jones, son-in-law of last week's winner
Chargin' Charlie Stephenson, qualified his #70 Monte
Carlo on the pole and never looked back during the
50-lap event.
Though Jones led wire to wire, he had to earn his
first victory of 2007 in an exciting race. Big Jim
Kelly stormed from sixth place in his famous K-7
machine and made a late race charge at Jones, once
making contact with him, to no avail.
For Jones, the win came as a welcome relief for other
reasons.
"I came out here and didn't know if I was going to be
able to pay my house payment," he said. "This will
help."
Kelly held on for second in the race with fading
tires, while Stephenson roared into third place. Kevin
Floars and Walt Gibson finished fourth and fifth.
Keith Oliver won his first race of the year in the
Harper's Graphics Limited Late Model Class, besting
last week's winner Jason White. Oliver led all thirty
laps in route to victory. Brandon Ennis charged from
the rear of the field after spinning early in the
event to finish third. Frankie Dominick held on to
fourth and Andy Wiley finished Fifth.
Jessie Richardson Jr. won his second race in a row in
the Citgo Mini-Mart Stock Four event, this time as a
result of a protest. After battling side by side,
sometimes three wide, with veteran racer David
Champion, it looked like Richardson would settle for
second. Following the race, Richardson protested
Champion's engine, and Champion in return refused to
tear down his engine, handing the win to Richardson.
The best race of the evening my have been in the 600
Inc. Legends car feature, with national champion and
pro driver Craig Goess Jr, holding off Wake County
Speedway's master driver Billy Gomez Jr. by a fender
at the finish. Brandon Temple finished third in the
25-lap event.
Next Friday night Wake County Speedway is at it again
with regular racing action and the return of the U-Car
class. Racing begins at 8 p.m.
Stephenson Claims Opening Night
Victory
By the Wake County Staff
Chargin' Charlie Stephenson of Garner went from heart
attack to heart pounding action in two weeks, and
claimed the opening night victory at Wake County
Speedway in the Super Late Model class.
Stephenson, who suffered a heart attack only two weeks
ago, didn't seem to lose a step when he got back
behind the wheel of his #85 Dodge at the .25 mile
bullring Friday night. Setting fast time with a lap of
13.19 seconds, Stephenson led most of the race,
holding off Raleigh's Joe Heighl at the finish.
Early in the race, Curtis Simpkins of Raleigh seemed
to have a chance at pulling out an underdog victory,
taking the lead at the drop of the green in his #3
Monte Carlo. However, Stephenson made short work of
Simpkins, and as the 16-car field bunched up behind
the #3 car on lap 12, trouble erupted with Simpkins,
Raleigh's Alex Fleming and Scott Carroll getting
tangled up in the mess.
Several other accidents marred the 50-lap main event.
When the dust cleared, it was former track champion
Walt Gibson in third, Big Jim Kelly in fourth and
Kevin Floars rounding out the top five.
In North Carolina Iron Works Pro Mod action,
Fuquay-Varina's Steve Smith dominated the race in his
LT1 Ford Fusion, leading wire to wire after setting
fast time. Last year's champion Todd Langdon chased
Smith the entire 30-lap race, but couldn't make a run
on him at the finish. Popular driver Dennis Capps
worked his way though the field to finish third,
Michael Tabler was fourth and Anthony Parker finished
fifth.
It was the same car, different winner in the 30-lap
Harper's Graphix Limited Late Model race. Jason White
claimed victory in the same car last year's champion
Jonathan Logan won nearly every race in 2006 with.
After claiming a victory in the heat race, White
bested the 11-car field easily in the feature. Andy
Wiley, who won the night's first heat race, battled
White hard during the opening laps but had to settle
for third as Keith Oliver's #18 made a late race pass
for second. Brandon Ennis brought his Monte Carlo home
in fourth place, and Coat's Tony Cooper finished
fifth.
In the Stock Four Cylinder race, Jessie Richardson Jr.
brought a brand new car to the track and it paid off,
winning his heat race and easily claiming the 25-lap
feature prize. The #7x seemed almost unstoppable,
easily holding off last year's championship runner up
David Champion. 12-year-old Lizzie Smith, daughter of
Steve Smith, made her Wake County Speedway debut and
finished a strong third in her version of the LT1.
Jeremy Ottoway was fourth and Matt Privette was fifth.
In the first ever Dirt Cheap Sand and Gravel U-Car
event, Jason Beck took the lead from the outside pole
and never looked back to claim victory. Kevin Riggoty
finished second in the class for low budget racers.
